A lawn shortcut turned into a new flower border, near Whitland

This customer's lawn in Llanfallteg, near Whitland, was just being walked across by guests as a shortcut. She's a keen gardener who's always adding to her plant collection, so she wanted that space turned into more plant space instead.
Each plant went in with fish, blood and bone and bark fibre worked into the hole to give it the best possible start, and we planted a good number of daffodil bulbs around them to bulk the border out further come spring. We finished the whole bed off with a mulch called strulch, a straw-based mulch that helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds and protect the plants over winter, which gives everything the best chance after planting this late in the season.
What we did
- Scraped back an area of lawn that had become an informal shortcut
- Marked out and planned the new border, using pots to test placement before planting
- Planted a mix of new plants with fish, blood and bone and bark fibre worked into each hole
- Planted daffodil and other bulbs around the new plants to bulk out the border in spring
- Mulched the finished border with strulch for weed suppression and winter protection
- Completed the work in around half a day

The area scraped back bare, ready to become a new border instead of a shortcut across the lawn.

Getting stuck into the work, digging out the last of the grass and roots by hand.

Planning out the layout before planting anything. We set the pots on the bed first to work out the best positions.

Fish, blood and bone worked into each planting hole, giving every plant the best possible start.

Planting daffodil bulbs around the new plants to bulk the border out further when spring comes.

Working through the bed, bulb by bulb.

The finished border. What was a lawn shortcut is now a proper flower bed.

A closer look at the finished planting, mulched with strulch, a straw-based mulch that helps lock in moisture, suppress weeds and protect the plants over winter (and smells lovely and fruity too).
